“TIDAK MAOK JUAL SAMA MELAYU … MELAYU KUAT TIPU!”

January 14, 2012

My friend was trying to strike a business deal with a non-Malay supplier/manufacturer when the supplier bluntly told him : “Tidak maok jual sama Melayu … Melayu kuat tipu (Don't want to sell to the Malays … (because) the Malays like to cheat.)”

He was shocked because he just could not believe what he had heard.

However, being a polite gentleman, he didn't retaliate. He knew that the non-Malay supplier didn't want to have a business with him. So the next thing to do was to excuse himself.

Later on the same day, he related the incident to me.

I told him that he must not feel offended with the racist remarks because most likely the non-Malay supplier had bad experiences in his dealings with the Malay businessmen.

After having a conversation with him, I rang up my non-Malay friend, who happened to be of the same race with the supplier.

I sought for his favour to ring up the supplier and asked him why he said that.

I also told my non-Malay friend to pretend as if he was my other friend's partner when he was talking with the supplier.

The next day, my non-Malay friend rang me up and said the non-Malay supplier denied he ever uttered the racist statement.

The non-Malay supplier also disclosed that he was thinking of quitting the business due to the intense pressure in the business.

I think my friend called up the non-Muslim supplier at the wrong time. May be at that time he was under heavy pressure to meet his business commitments.

To me, when it comes to cheating, it is not confined to any particular community, race or religion.

Thus, it is very wrong so that this or that community likes to cheat just because we have had bad experiences with members of the community.
